Mental health disciplines, including neuroscience, psychiatry, psychology, and the social sciences, are rapidly evolving, generating new knowledge through research and innovation in clinical practice. However, these fields do not exist in isolation. Their insights, methods, and interventions must be understood in relation to the broader social, cultural, and structural realities in which people live. One of the central challenges facing mental health in Africa is bridging the gap between theoretical advances and meaningful, contextually grounded implementation that improves people’s lives.
The aim of the webinar is to interrogate whose knowledge shapes mental health practice and how colonial histories, inequality, and culture influence current systems. Our diverse panel of experts — including clinicians, early- and late-career researchers, traditional healers, and individuals with lived experience — will establish a shared conceptual foundation and identify gaps between theory and lived realities.
